NORMAL ROADS
Pull over to the side of the road, if possible. Switch on hazard warning lights. Turn off engine and extinguish cigarettes. Use passenger door to exit the vehicle. Place warning triangle on road at least 45 metres behind vehicle. Lock valuables in the boot if leaving vehicle to seek assistance. Use mobile phone, if available. Keep children and animals inside the vehicle. Carry warm clothing, food and torch in case of emergencies. In winter keep de-icer, shovel, blankets, tow rope and jump leads in your car.
MOTORWAYS
Leave motorway at the next exit if the engine is still running. Otherwise, pull safely onto the hard shoulder. Switch on hazard warning lights. Keep as far to the left as possible on the hard shoulder and exit by the passenger door. Place a warning triangle approximately 150 metres behind your vehicle. Keep animals inside the vehicle.
Park near an emergency telephone, if possible, or locate marker post indicating the shortest route to the emergency telephone. This is linked to the Police central control room. Inform them of the number of the telephone you are calling from, give details of your car, registration number, some information about your breakdown and membership number of any motoring organisation you belong to. They will redirect your details to that motoring organisation. If, however, you are not a member, they will send a local garage breakdown service to assist you. These are usually very expensive especially if you have just run out of fuel!
You should return to your vehicle and wait with your passengers on the embankment. It is unsafe to remain on the hard shoulder for longer than necessary as there is a high risk of being hit by a passing vehicle, particularly large vehicles. The police will remove your vehicle and charge you for the privilege if your vehicle presents a danger to other motorists.
